I Do Like Them Dirty

Hi, Primmies:

On Wednesday I did a post about a wish list I had started. I listed some patterns from Victoria of Kentucky Primitives. Well, in the
post I made a comment about how I like Primitives and of course
my blog has primitives in it's title, but I said how some of them I
didn't make because they looked a bit on the 'dirty' side. WELL,
I take that back!! And this is one of the reasons why:
Photo copyright Create & Decorate All American Crafts Inc.
~Upate: I  found the link for Kim Grasso's patterns. Click
Kim's Whims ~
Can you stand it? Isn't she ADORABLE? Her name is
"Miss Peabody" and she is designed by Kim Grasso. The
pattern and directions are in the March/April 2012 issue
of Create & Decorate. And she's a huge bunny. I don't know
exactly how big of a bunny she is but she's at least two feet
and maybe 8-9 inches, so she's close to one yard in length!
Now here's the fun part and what changed my mind about
being 'dirty'. Kim supplied some grunging instructions to
go along with the finish of Ms. Peabody and there are two
methods that she gives. Now I know everyone that does
extreme prims probably knows about the recipe(s) but I did
not know about this one ingredient: molasses! I had heard
about the coffee and spices and vanilla, and even brown
craft paint to make a nice deep stain, but molasses was
news to me. I think that this rabbit is going to be the sweetest
smelling prim I've ever made. Here is Kim Grasso's method
for grunge:
" add two tablespoons of instant coffee to every two cups
of boiling water in Mason jar; if desired, add 1/4 cup of
vanilla, 1/4 cup of molasses and a tablespoon each of ground
cinnamon, nutmeg, and/or cloves. Shake to mix and set aside".
Also, if using a spray bottle to apply she says to only use if
you aren't adding ground spices because they will clog your
spray nozzle. In that case paint the mixture on the rabbit,
undies and dress. Some of you like to paint the grunge on
anyway as opposed to spraying on.
So now you know why I changed my mind about dirty, grunge-y
prims. I'm apt to change my mind a lot, so don't mind me!

If you don't have this month's issue of Create & Decorate, it's also got some really nice folk art painting projects, more sew-
ing projects and punch needle, rug hooking a sampler and also
mixed medium projects. There are free projects included on the
website so don't forget to check if you aren't buying the
magazine. Here's the link again: Create & Decorate.

Ms. Peabody will be my next giveaway item after the sampler
I'm working on. Speaking of, I'm coming along with the sampler nicely, I'm starting the dividing band after her name 'Polly
Daggett' and there's the bottom urns and the rest of the borders.
I'm having a harder time with the borders than anything else,
so I'm leaving them for the end. They were supposed to be done
first but I was making too many mistakes! (like Polly)

Hugs to all my Primmies,

Susan

MY FIRST BLOG AWARD

Dear Primmies:

Today when I arrived home from a doctor's appointment there was a blog comment waiting for me from Robin of
The Primitive Hutch blog. She had been given the above award
"The Versatile Blogger" and when you get it you are supposed
to pass it along to 15 other bloggers. She chose to do 10, easier
to do Robin said. And I was one of her ten choices. I'm so
pleased and thrilled that Robin included me.  Thank you so much Robin!                                                                                     Please read her Post HERE where she explains what the award is about and  to learn some fun facts about Robin that you might not know.
My part of accepting the award is that I choose 10 bloggers whom I think do a variety of things well at once and to write about my 7 random things that you might not know about me!
I'll be getting my list together for bloggie love and thinking about the 7 random things for this weekend.
Thanks again, Robin. I am happy to receive the award.
Hugs,
Susan

A NEW TWIST ON THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS AND MY CHRISTMAS SURPRISE FROM MY SWEETHEART

Evenin', Primmies,
If you can please visit Karen of Buttons In The Attic. She is
doing a series of The Twelve Days of Christmas Cookies.
Today is Day 2 so we aren't too far behind. She said she might sneak some candy recipes in there, too!
Also announced was the winner of Karen's first Giveaway winner. It's Jodi of Crafts By Jodi. Congratulations, Jodi.
I hope to be back tonight to post again about our day. It was
extraordinary in a couple of ways. I know you're going to
be super busy from now til Christmas, but I'd hoped to get
more of you to give me your "giveaway wish". I asked a couple of days ago from some of my suggestions of what I'm able to craft what you'd like to see me have in a giveaway.
I only had about half a dozen responses.  If that's to be what
I go from, that's ok, too. Cuz I got different answers and that's good for a surprise. I am planning on adding a 'real primitive'
from one of my treasures along with a handmade by me so
I hope I get a lot of entries. I said it would be after the holiday and I think it will be right after the 1st of the year, because I found out that Mr. Glen Oaks is taking me to The Wachusett Village Inn on Christmas Eve through to New Year's Eve. We'll be home on Christmas Day to be with our kids and then back we go. It's only 25 minutes from here, but they have separate fireplaced cottages on the grounds that were built in the late 40's-early '50s and they are very Early Colonial. The furniture and bedding, too. The beds and chairs are very colonial. I was there today in the fireside lounge (did that fire smell good) and saw the cottages. They look like they were just built, most of them are Cape Cods. There were a couple of Gambrel-style. I'm so excited. I haven't been away in years.
They bring the wood to the cottage, it's right near                     Mt. Wachusett which is a pretty popular ski resort.
No more skiing for this primmy (too many rods, ceramic plates and screws in my spine) and Mr. Glen Oaks has never skied. We're planning on having Christmas Eve dinner at
The 1761 Old Mill, you should see this place inside. I hope I can take some pictures. I was hoping Santa brought me a new camera but I don't really want him to now after this surprise. I think this is over the top for a present and I love my hubba so much.
Wow, I meant to stop talking paragraphs ago. I still have more to tell you about our day. We had the most beautiful thing happen to us. I am still getting teary-eyed about it.
We took a drive that was supposed to go nowhere in particular when...

While I'm Thinking Of It

Hi, Primmies,
I want to take this moment to thank ALL of my followers. When I
started blogging in May every time I picked up a follower, I'd
scream out to hubba, "hunny, I've got a follower", "hunny, I've
got another follower,  "hunny..." you get the idea! I've picked up
quite a few in the past week alone and I'm thrilled. I feel like
such a winner. I know that  a lot of it is due to your very sweet
comments and one having me on their blog list has led to another
and another, and I have ALL of you who've visited to thank.
My little group of early followers, you know who you are and I
will never forget the feeling of happiness you gave to me from
finding me noteworthy to follow along with.
Also, I realize that every once in a while I have something on the
blog that isn't "truly Prim". I hope you won't hold that against me
since I call this Glen Oaks Primitives, but some artists' work is
just SO beautiful (like the vintage train case) that I think there's
others like me who can appreciate the beauty. My heart is Prim
even though I like to "window shop" and peek in some different
store windows.
'Nite, Primmies...

New Patterns Released For Winter

Hi, Primmies, here are a few Winter/Holiday patterns that I like.
Penny Rugs are a very old craft that has become extremely popular
again. The two here are just but a sampling of the many patterns
out there. I love these "evergreen trees" by Dee Duncan Folk Art
in the little rusty cans below. The snowman is adorable, he has
his own supply of snowballs ready!

There are so many new patterns for penny rugs and
candle mats for winter, for those of us who do not design
patterns.

working on or finished. I would love to start a gallery for

Fabric Pumpkin Tutorial By Lynne for The Primitive Pantry

THE PRIMITIVE PANTRY
FABRIC PUMPKIN SEWING TUTORIAL
Stuffing
Strong Quilting Thread or Upholstery Thread
Darning or Upholstery Needle
Garden Twine or String or Embroidery Thread
Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
Strong Cotton or quilting cotton
Cinnamon Stick Or Other Sticks/stalk

Start with A4 size of fabric*
Cut in half lengthwise

Fold in half across the length and sew short ends together
Sew a running stitch around one end of fabric and
Pull together and knot tightly
Turn right side out
Repeat for open end
Fill with stuffing, the tighter you stuff the tighter the
Pumpkin will finish
Pull the thread to gather and tie off, leaving a small hole.

Use the palm of your hand to roll the pumpkin around
To flatten and get to the shape you like
Take darning needle and string, begin at the bottom of
Pumpkin and stitch up into the hole in the pumpkin
Go down through the middle and out the bottom,
Repeat for all sections

Tie off and cut excess string
If you have some creases down the sides of the
Pumpkin gently push some extra filling in through
The top hole and work into each of the segments to
Make them fuller
Take cinnamon stick, cut half, cut 2 small fabric circle
(You can make the stars green or rust if you like contrast like I do)

And star shape cut slits in 1 circle and star shape
Push cinnamon stick through star shape and circle
Glue to top of pumpkin pushing stick into hole and
Pushing down circle and star
Glue circle to bottom end of pumpkin to cover stitches

*You can vary the size of pumpkins,
just make sure the fabric length is double the width
I hope you can use this tutorial to make lots of pumpkin pods and some nice, big
fat ones to scatter about your house. Use lots of different colors, white, black, green and rust.
Different fabrics can give you all kinds of looks. You can also make larger ones from
muslin and follow the same instructions, just paint them orange (dilute craft paint with
water)or any other color you wish and then grubby them with 3tbs. coffee crystals in 1 c hot water, paint  it on your pumpkins and then rub with ice tea crystals. They absorb into the fabric for a good grubby look, cinnamon tends to stay on top and rubs away and is a little grittier. If you don't want to paint just get different colors of fabrics (wash to remove the sizing). Experiment on scraps of fabric/painted fabric and find the look you like. The grubby mix will get into the nooks and dimples of the pumpkins. You can spray a very light coat of spray adhesive to help your cinnamon/ice tea crystals stay on.   Have fun today!

Halloween Cats & Jacks Penny Rug and Penny Pocket

(As you read along, I have put links thru the post for you to click and go to the web
pages for the pattern(s) and video)
Even if you start from scratch and make your own versions or something completely
different, this VIDEO from Joggles.com will help you
learn some fast tips for making penny rugs. I like Penny Lane Primitives patterns on Joggles because they show you underneath the pattern a complete list of all materials
needed to make the items so you can know what you need and not wait until you get the pattern. You can check your "stash" before you buy things that you don't need.
Go HERE to see the pattern and materials list.
I just watched the VIDEO for a Penny Pocket. The pattern from PENNY LANE PRIMITIVES makes the Penny Rug and Penny Pocket and it's
only $8.50. They also have a KIT that includes the pattern, the wool felt to make both the rug
and the pocket, the DMC floss, a chenille needle and freezer paper for tracing and transfer.
If you watch the video, they show you some great tips that make the tracing, cutting and
construction of these little pieces go much easier and faster.
I hope that this helps you learn a little something that you didn't know about tracing and cutting little pieces for penny's or any applique projects.
Have a great rest-of-your-weekend, Primmies!

Bloggers Are The Best: Look What I Got In The Mail Today!

You may remember a couple of weeks ago the giveaway at The Country Primitive Shoppe for "The Crow's Guide To Magic" book and soft sculpture that Dina was having on her blog. There was also a "name that bowl filler" contest. You can click on
(here)The Country Primitive Shoppe to go to Dina's blog.
Well, imagine my surprise when she told me I was getting a "surprise" ornament for being so kind about spreading the word and following her blog. It came in the mail today, here he is:
(again, I apologize for the camera work, I just don't have any talent for taking pictures)

The picture doesn't do him justice. He's a very pretty painted light brown color, muslin gingerbread boy stuffed and stiffened, with little black glass seed eyes and painted cream squiggles on his hands and feet. He's about 5 1/2 inches long and 3 1/2 inches arm to arm. I love him.
And, this was another big gesture of kindness that prim and arts and crafts bloggers are famous for. I love showing artists' work, giveaways and tutorials and don't expect anything in return. But it's awfully nice indeed when an artist and fellow blogger shows their appreciation by sending an unexpected gift. The group of bloggers that I follow and their followers are the nicest people I've ever met.
Warm Regards,
Susan
